History of EAEU
1994
On March 29, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, first suggested the idea of forming a trade alliance to create a Single Economic Space and adopt a joint defence policy during his first official visit to Russia at the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. In June, for the first time in the project, the new trade alliance was named Eurasian Union.
1995
The Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation signed the Treaty on the Customs Union for the purpose of increasing economic cooperation, free trade and fair competition for the participants.
1999
On February 26, in Moscow, the Presidents of the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan signed the Treaty on the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space.
2000
On October 10, in Astana, the Presidents of the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan established the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC).
2010
In January, the Customs Union of the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation entered into force: a common customs tariff was introduced, and customs clearance and customs control at internal borders were canceled.
2011
In October, a decision was made to start negotiations on the accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Customs Union. In November 2011, the leaders of the countries of the Customs Union signed:
- The Declaration on the Eurasian Economic Integration, in which they announced the transition from January 1, 2012 to the next stage of structural integration – a single economic space;
- The Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Commission – the regulatory body of the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space.
2012
In January, the Single Economic Space entered into force, which laid the groundwork for free movement of goods and services, capital and labor on the territories of the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. In February, the Eurasian Economic Commission, headquartered in Moscow, commenced operation.
2014
On May 29, the presidents of the member States of the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space signed the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). On October 10, the Treaty on the Accession of the Republic of Armenia to the EAEU was signed. On December 23, the Treaty on the Accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the EAEU was signed.
2015
On January 1, the Treaty on the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union entered into force. On January 2, the Republic of Armenia officially joined the EAEU. On May 29, the first agreement was signed between the EAEU and Vietnam on the creation of a free-trade zone. In August, the procedure for the accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the EAEU was completed.
